OWERRI—Workers of Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, last Wednesday, withdrew their services in Imo State thereby throwing the entire state into darkness.
Vanguard investigations revealed that the action of PHCN workers was in full compliance with directive of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, on the on-going strike over the withdrawal of fuel subsidy.
Apart from this development, Imo had remained very peaceful despite repeated threats by the NLC and TUC leaders that markets, motor parks and commercial transport outfits to close shop or face stiff sanctions.
While federal and state secretariats remained under lock and key as at yesterday, shops, markets and motor parks, as well as some private educational institutions in the state remained open for business.
However, a handful of protesters processed peacefully from the Edede Street NLC Office to the Library Roundabout, Owerri, carrying placards and chanting anti-government slogans.
