The immediate-past Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Akwa Ibom State, Oyong Asuquo, died in a motor accident which occurred along the Oruko-Okobo road on Saturday.
According to an aide of the former commissioner, who requested anonymity, Asuquo was returning to Uyo from a night-long meeting in Oron, ahead of Saturday’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairmanship primary election when the accident occurred.
The Akwa Ibom Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Fidelis Osakwe, confirmed the incident, saying that Asuquo drove himself when the accident occurred.
“He (Asuquo) actually died at about 9.15 a.m.,” Osakwe said.
The late Asuquo was once the Chairman of Oron Local Government Area, and was a member of the State Executive Council since the inception of Akpabio’s administration in 2007, until the cabinet was dissolved a few days ago.
